Unit Conversion Calculator: Convert Any Measurement

Unit Conversion Calculator

Convert a value between compatible length, mass, temperature, volume and area units. The tool rejects cross-category pairs instead of producing a meaningless number.

The script converts compatible physical quantities only and preserves no more accuracy than the original value.

Compatible quantities come first

A conversion changes the unit used to express the same physical quantity. Length can be converted to another length unit, mass to mass, volume to volume and area to area. Kilometres cannot be converted directly to kilograms because no universal relationship connects distance and mass. The calculator checks the categories before applying a factor.

Some everyday requests actually need an additional property. Converting litres of fuel to kilograms requires fuel density; converting square metres to litres of paint requires coverage and coats; converting data speed to download time requires file size. Those are calculations rather than pure unit conversions and belong in tools with the extra inputs visible.

Exact and conventional factors

The metric prefixes are powers of ten: one kilometre is 1,000 metres, one centimetre is 0.01 metre and one millimetre is 0.001 metre. International definitions make one inch exactly 0.0254 metre and one pound exactly 0.45359237 kilogram. These exact definitions support the length and mass factors used by the script.

A US gallon is 3.785411784 litres. It is not the same as an imperial gallon used in some contexts. The label explicitly says US gallon to prevent a silent mismatch. When reading a foreign specification, identify which gallon, ton or ounce system is intended before entering a number.

Area factors must be squared

Area measures two dimensions. Because one foot is 0.3048 metre, one square foot is 0.3048 squared square metres, or 0.09290304 m². Multiplying an area by the linear foot-to-metre factor alone is wrong. The calculator stores dedicated area factors and does not infer them from the length selection.

One hectare is 10,000 square metres. Hectares are useful for land area but do not describe shape or boundary length. Two plots with the same area can require very different fencing. Use dimensions or a perimeter calculator when the question concerns edges rather than surface.

Temperature needs an offset

Most unit pairs use multiplication by a constant factor. Celsius and Fahrenheit also have different zero points, so the conversion includes an offset: F = C times 9/5 plus 32. Kelvin shares the Celsius degree size but starts at absolute zero, making K = C + 273.15. Treating temperature as a simple ratio gives incorrect ordinary readings.

A temperature interval is different from a temperature reading. A change of 1 °C equals a change of 1 K and 1.8 °F, but 1 °C as an absolute reading is 33.8 °F. This calculator converts readings. For differences, apply only the scale factor and state that the value is an interval.

Precision and significant figures

The decimal-place selector controls display, not underlying measurement quality. Converting 2 metres measured to the nearest metre into 78.740157 inches does not create six-decimal accuracy. Report a number of significant figures consistent with the source and purpose, and retain extra digits only during intermediate calculations to reduce rounding drift.

For money, engineering tolerances or laboratory work, document whether rounding occurs at each step or only at the end. Repeatedly converting back and forth with rounded displays can accumulate differences. Keep one base-unit value where possible and derive presentation units from it.

Worked length and mass checks

One kilometre converts to approximately 0.621371 miles. Reversing the selection should return one kilometre apart from chosen display rounding. A useful rough check is that five kilometres is a little more than three miles. If a result says hundreds of miles, the unit selection or decimal position is wrong.

For mass, one kilogram is about 2.20462 pounds, while one pound is about 0.453592 kilogram. Grams and ounces are much smaller units. Estimate the direction before calculating: converting a fixed mass from kilograms to pounds should produce a larger numerical value because each pound is smaller than a kilogram.

South African measurement context

South Africa uses the metric system for ordinary official and commercial measurement. Metres, kilometres, kilograms, litres and degrees Celsius are therefore the most common local target units. Imported equipment, recipes, screens and overseas property listings can still use inches, feet, pounds, US gallons or square feet.

When converting a specification, preserve the unit with the value in notes and quotations. A bare number invites mistakes later. If legislation, a building standard or a medical instruction specifies a unit, use the required official unit and confirm whether a conversion is permitted for the final record.

Sanity checks before using a result

Check category, direction and order of magnitude. Converting to a smaller unit normally increases the numerical value, except temperature offsets complicate that intuition. Confirm that negative inputs make sense: negative temperatures are ordinary, while negative mass, length or volume usually represents a difference or data error rather than a physical amount.

For high-stakes manufacturing, dosing, surveying or trade measurement, use calibrated instruments, approved conversion standards and the rounding rules of the relevant profession. This calculator provides transparent arithmetic, not certification of the source measurement or fitness of the converted value.

Conversions not included

The selection does not include currency, data storage, cooking spoons, pressure, energy, power or fuel economy. Currency conversion needs a dated exchange rate. Digital storage can use decimal or binary prefixes. Recipe units can vary by country and ingredient. Each needs definitions that a single universal factor list would hide. Nautical miles and aviation units also require their own operational context.

If a required unit is absent, identify an authoritative base-unit relationship and perform the conversion with the full unit written at every line. Avoid borrowing an unlabelled factor from a search snippet. Standards, product specifications and regulated records should point to the exact definition and version used, particularly when tolerances or payments depend on it. Record the factor beside the converted result so another reader can reproduce the arithmetic and verify every unit cancellation independently.

Check the unit direction

Write the starting value with its unit, the conversion factor and the target unit on one line. Units should cancel algebraically, leaving only the requested unit. This dimensional check catches the common error of multiplying where division was required. Round only after the conversion and retain enough working digits for the decision being made.

Questions that affect this result

Can I convert litres to kilograms?

Not without density. Litres measure volume and kilograms measure mass, so the substance and conditions are required.

Why is US gallon labelled explicitly?

A US gallon differs from an imperial gallon. The calculator uses 3.785411784 litres per US gallon.

Why does temperature not show one constant factor?

Celsius, Fahrenheit and kelvin have different zero points, so readings need offsets as well as scale changes.

Does six decimal places mean the answer is accurate to six places?

No. Output precision cannot exceed the accuracy of the original measurement.

Can I convert square feet with the foot-to-metre factor?

No. Area factors are squared; one square foot is 0.09290304 square metres.
