Two different questions in one comparison
A fixed deposit can be used to grow capital until maturity or to provide periodic interest. These are not the same cash-flow pattern. The reinvested result compounds after-tax interest inside the calculation, while the monthly-income line simply divides annual after-tax interest on the original principal by twelve. A real provider may quote a different rate for monthly payout than for interest at maturity.
Choose the result that matches the product term sheet. If interest is paid away, it normally does not remain in the account to earn further interest. If it is capitalised, the maturity balance can compound. Comparing a payout result with a reinvestment quote without aligning the rate, term and payment timing can make one product appear better for the wrong reason.
Enter the rate exactly as quoted
The calculator treats the entered percentage as a nominal annual rate and divides it by the selected number of compounding periods. A bank may instead advertise an effective annual rate, which already incorporates compounding. Entering an effective rate as nominal with monthly compounding will overstate growth. Look for wording such as nominal annual rate, effective rate, annual percentage yield or interest at maturity.
Rates often depend on deposit size, term, age category, account channel and whether interest is paid monthly or at maturity. This calculator does not retrieve a TymeBank, Absa or other provider rate. Compounding formula
For reinvested interest, the calculation is principal multiplied by one plus the after-tax nominal rate divided by compounding frequency, raised to frequency times years. Monthly terms are converted to years by dividing by twelve. Daily compounding uses 365 periods for a transparent estimate; provider day-count conventions, leap years and actual posting dates can create small differences.
More frequent compounding produces a slightly higher effective return when the nominal rate is unchanged. It does not guarantee a better offer because another account can have a higher nominal rate with less frequent compounding. Compare maturity values from the same principal, start date and term, and check whether fees or minimum balances reduce the amount actually earning interest.
Tax input is personal
South African interest may be taxable after applicable exemptions and rules. The page does not determine residence, age, exemptions, withholding or marginal income-tax rate. Instead it offers an effective tax-on-interest field. Leave it at zero for a gross comparison, or enter a planning percentage only after considering your own tax position.
The script reduces the interest rate by that percentage before compounding, which approximates tax being recognised as interest accrues. Actual assessment timing can differ. A tax-free investment account is a separate regulated wrapper with contribution limits and penalties; an ordinary fixed deposit does not become tax free merely because its interest is below an estimate.
Inflation and purchasing power
The real-value result divides the nominal maturity balance by compounded assumed inflation. It expresses future money in today’s purchasing-power terms. A positive nominal interest amount can therefore coexist with modest or negative real growth. Inflation is unknown in advance and differs by household spending pattern, so the field is a scenario, not a forecast.
Try a low, central and high inflation assumption rather than trusting one decimal. The purpose is to see whether the margin between deposit return and inflation is robust. For money needed at a fixed near-term date, certainty and capital access can matter more than maximising an uncertain real return.
Liquidity and early withdrawal
A fixed deposit usually exchanges access for a stated rate. Early withdrawal may be prohibited, delayed, repriced or charged a penalty. The calculator assumes the principal remains invested for the entire entered term and does not deduct an early-withdrawal cost. Do not place emergency money into a lock-up period without understanding the exit process.
Check whether interest already paid monthly can be reclaimed or whether a break cost applies. Also confirm what happens at maturity: automatic renewal can roll funds into a new term at a different rate. Record a maturity reminder and the provider’s instruction deadline if you do not want an automatic reinvestment.
Credit and concentration risk
A quoted return is only one dimension of a deposit decision. Confirm the legal entity taking the deposit, applicable regulatory protection, limits of any deposit insurance arrangement and whether several brands belong to the same institution. Holding a very large amount with one provider can concentrate risk even when the product description sounds conservative.
Do not confuse a bank fixed deposit with a market-linked note, collective investment, insurance policy or unsecured lending product. Capital guarantees, access rules and tax treatment differ. The calculator’s arithmetic can compare cash flows only after the product category and contractual promise are understood.
A practical quote-comparison method
Create one scenario per written quote. Enter the exact principal, term, nominal rate, payment method and compounding convention, then record the displayed maturity and monthly-income values. Add a note for fees, early access, maturity instructions and quote expiry. Do not blend a promotional rate from one term with access features from another.
Finally, compare both rand and real values, but avoid false precision. A bank’s final cents can differ because of transaction dates and rounding. If regular income is the goal, verify the actual payment amount and first payment date. If capital growth is the goal, verify the contractual maturity value directly with the provider before committing funds. Confirm whether weekend or holiday maturity changes the payment date, and check the destination account before the term ends so access is not delayed.
