Geometry is only the starting point; product data, preparation and observed coverage determine the final purchase quantity and coating sequence. Measure every colour and substrate group separately before combining container sizes.
Measuring rectangular surfaces
A rectangle’s area is length multiplied by width. Measure both in metres to obtain square metres. For a wall, length is horizontal wall width and width in the field can represent height. Divide an irregular wall into rectangles, calculate each area and add them before subtracting openings.
Measure each surface rather than assuming opposite walls match. Record dimensions to sensible precision and label them. A 5 cm error across a long wall can matter more than rounding the final paint volume to two decimals.
Circular surfaces
For a circle, the entered first dimension is diameter. Radius is diameter divided by two, and area is π times radius squared. The rectangle-width field is ignored. Confusing radius and diameter multiplies area by four, a large error that a plausible-looking decimal can hide.
For a ring or annulus, calculate outer circle area minus inner circle area and enter that net geometry through a separate manual step. The openings field can represent the inner excluded circle if it is calculated accurately first.
Subtracting openings
Doors, windows, built-in cupboards or unpainted panels can be combined into excluded square metres. The script requires that amount to be less than gross area. Small openings are sometimes not subtracted because cutting-in and waste use paint, but that is a practical estimating choice rather than geometry.
Keep reveals, frames and doors separate if they use another coating or colour. A window removed from wall area may still have a frame that needs enamel. One total litre estimate cannot represent products with different coverage.
Coats and coat-area
Net area is multiplied by number of coats. Two coats over 13 m² create 26 m²-coats. This distinction prevents a common mistake where physical wall area is doubled and later mistaken for room size. The result labels coated area explicitly.
Primer is not automatically one of the finish coats. New plaster, repaired patches, stains or a strong colour change may need a specific primer or additional coat. Follow drying and recoat times; applying a second coat too early can damage finish and coverage.
Coverage rate
Coverage in m² per litre per coat should come from the exact product technical data. Smooth sealed surfaces may approach the stated rate, while rough, porous or textured surfaces consume more. Roller nap, brush, spray loss and painter technique also matter.
Do not use one brand’s coverage for another product or a primer. If the label gives a range, calculate with the lower coverage for a conservative estimate and compare a central case. Tint base and deep colours can also affect opacity and coat count.
Waste and touch-up allowance
The allowance is applied after coats and coverage. It can cover tray residue, roller loading, spills, surface variation and future touch-up. A very high percentage should prompt better measurement or a product test rather than automatically buying excess.
Keep leftover paint sealed, labelled with room and colour code, and stored according to manufacturer guidance away from children and heat. Disposal must follow local requirements; never pour unwanted coating into drains or onto soil.
Container benchmark
The page rounds estimated litres up to a number of five-litre containers only as a quick benchmark. Actual packs may be 1 L, 5 L, 20 L or another size. Optimise available combinations without buying less than needed, and consider whether unopened containers can be returned.
For one continuous colour, enough paint from the same batch reduces colour variation. If batches differ, boxing paint by mixing containers can improve uniformity where the manufacturer permits it. Confirm tint and sheen before opening every pack.
Preparation changes the outcome
Cleaning, drying, repairing cracks, sanding, removing loose coating and sealing stains influence adhesion and practical coverage. Paint cannot correct active damp, leaks or structural movement. Resolve the cause before coating, and use safe methods for old surfaces that may contain hazardous materials.
Wear appropriate protective equipment, provide ventilation and follow product safety data. Ladders, scaffolding and spray application add risks beyond paint quantity. A qualified contractor may be appropriate for height, lead, asbestos, industrial coatings or extensive damp.
Room estimate workflow
Sketch every wall and ceiling, mark openings, group by product and colour, and calculate each group. Add finish coats, primer and trim separately. Compare the sum with a contractor quote by area, coat count and product rather than only by total litres.
After the first area is coated, observe actual consumption and update the remaining estimate. That measured coverage is often more useful than a generic allowance. Preserve enough reserve to complete a continuous wall before changing product batch.
Multiple walls and ceilings
For a rectangular room, calculate wall area as perimeter multiplied by wall height, then subtract openings. The perimeter is twice length plus twice width. Calculate the ceiling separately as room length multiplied by room width because it may use a different colour, sheen or specialised bathroom product.
Feature walls, alcoves, columns and sloped ceilings should be separate measured surfaces. Do not multiply one wall by four unless the dimensions genuinely match. A spreadsheet or labelled sketch prevents the same opening being subtracted twice and lets another person verify every dimension before purchase.
Colour, sheen and substrate changes
A dramatic change from dark to light or light to saturated colour may need a tinted primer or additional finish coat even when the surface area is unchanged. Gloss level and resin type can also affect practical opacity and application. Test a sample under room lighting before committing to the full quantity.
Wood, metal, masonry and plaster require different preparation and compatible products. The calculator’s litres cannot be pooled across substrates merely because coverage numbers look similar. Follow the technical data for each system from primer through topcoat, including curing conditions and maximum recoat windows.
Measure the actual paintable surface
Sketch every wall and ceiling as separate rectangles, subtract only openings that will not be painted, and add returns, reveals or feature surfaces.
