How Your Energy Bill Works

Your energy bill consists of two main components that work together to determine your total cost:

Unit Rate

This is what you pay for each kilowatt hour of energy you actually use. Think of it like the price per litre of petrol. The more you use, the more you pay. Current typical rates sit around 24-25p per kWh for electricity and 6-7p per kWh for gas. These rates vary by region and supplier.

Standing Charge

This is a fixed daily fee you pay regardless of how much energy you use. It covers the cost of maintaining the pipes and cables that bring energy to your home, plus meter maintenance. Even if you’re away for a month, you’ll still pay the standing charge. Current typical standing charges are around 53p per day for electricity and 31p per day for gas.

Several factors might explain this. First, check if you’re comparing the same time periods. Winter bills are typically much higher due to heating. Also, verify the unit rates on your bill match what you entered. Some tariffs have multiple rates for different times of day. Finally, make sure any debt repayments or other charges are accounted for separately.
What’s the difference between kWh and m³ for gas?
Your gas meter measures volume in cubic metres (m³), but you’re billed based on energy content in kilowatt hours (kWh). Gas composition varies slightly, so suppliers convert m³ to kWh using a formula that accounts for pressure, temperature, and calorific value. Roughly, 1 m³ of gas equals about 11.2 kWh, though this varies.
Can I reduce my standing charge?
Standing charges are largely regulated and similar across suppliers, though small variations exist. Some suppliers offer tariffs with no standing charge but higher unit rates, which might suit very low users. However, for most households, the standard standing charge structure works out cheaper overall. Focus on reducing your energy consumption to lower your total bill.
How often does the price cap change?
