Taxi Fare Calculator Australia | Estimate Trip Cost

Taxi Fare Calculator Australia

Estimate a metered taxi fare from flagfall, route kilometres, stationary waiting minutes, booking, toll, airport and other charges. Current Queensland rank-or-hail maximum rate cards from 1 July 2026 are provided as transparent presets; every other Australian trip should use verified local or quoted rates.

This is an arithmetic estimate, not a booking quote or meter reading.

Scope: The preset rate cards are limited to Queensland rank-or-hail maximum fares effective 1 July 2026. Booked services, other states, negotiated fares, subsidies, accessible services, local exceptions and later rate changes require current official or provider information.

How the fare estimate is calculated

The distance component multiplies entered route kilometres by the distance rate. Waiting applies only to entered stationary or meter-eligible minutes, not automatically to the whole journey duration. Flagfall, booking, tolls, airport access and other agreed extras are added. The payment surcharge scenario is then calculated on that subtotal, followed by a confirmed subsidy or discount capped at the amount available.

This order is a transparent planning convention. A jurisdiction or provider can define the base for a surcharge or subsidy differently. A taximeter can switch between time and distance charging according to speed, or apply both across the journey under a permitted structure. Use the calculation only when the entered minutes and rates reflect the chosen meter structure.

Distance charge: route kilometres × entered per-kilometre rate.
Waiting charge: eligible waiting minutes × entered per-minute rate.
Estimate: flagfall + distance + waiting + fixed extras + payment surcharge − confirmed subsidy.

Queensland presets use the current rank-or-hail structure

Queensland publishes maximum taxi fares and reviews them annually. From 1 July 2026, the weekday 7 am to 7 pm flagfall is $3.80 and the all-other-times flagfall is $6.20. Waiting is $1.04 per minute. The distance rate is $2.77 per kilometre in South East Queensland, $2.88 in regional Queensland and $4.70 in rural Queensland.

The preset button copies those values into editable fields and sets booking to zero because the named cards are for a rank or hail scenario. Tolls and airport charges remain user inputs. The preset is a dated reference, not a statement that every journey is charged at the maximum.

Booked taxi fares can follow different rules

Queensland states that most ordinary booked taxi and ride-booking services are not subject to the rank-or-hail maximum fare. A fare estimate must be provided before the booked journey, or the fare agreed in advance. Special rules continue for Taxi Subsidy Scheme members and wheelchair users needing a wheelchair accessible taxi.

For a booked trip, choose the custom rate card and enter the provider’s written estimate or relevant components. Do not apply a Queensland rank preset and then add a booking fee as though that reproduces a booked provider’s tariff. The maximum booking fee shown in Queensland’s protected scenarios is not a universal national booking charge.

Distance must come from the expected road route

A taxi travels between pickup and destination using roads. Straight-line distance, postcode separation and a remembered trip length can miss one-way streets, bridges, access roads, closures and the route chosen. Use a current route estimate, then understand that the actual metered distance can change with conditions and passenger instructions.

A longer route is not automatically improper if it avoids a closure, follows a requested toll road or is otherwise reasonable. Queensland rules state that a driver must not drive in a way that involves excessive charging. If a route difference matters, retain the addresses, time and receipt and raise it through the relevant process rather than inferring intent from this calculator.

Waiting minutes are not total journey minutes

Under the Queensland structure described on the official passenger page, waiting is charged when the taxi is not moving. Enter the estimated stationary time, not the full pickup-to-drop-off duration. Traffic signals, congestion, passenger stops and loading can affect the meter, while driver-initiated breaks can have different treatment.

Victoria illustrates why one national formula cannot be assumed. It permits fare structures based on time or distance according to speed and another structure in which time and distance both apply throughout the journey. A Victoria estimate must use the actual displayed fare structure and current area rates, not the Queensland presets.

Flagfall, tolls and airport fees are separate

Flagfall is the opening meter charge. Tolls and airport rank or access fees can be passed through where permitted. They should be recorded as their actual amounts rather than inflated through the distance rate. Ask whether a toll route is requested, optional or necessary and whether the fare estimate includes it.

Airport pickup arrangements vary by terminal, rank and provider. The field does not contain a live airport fee. Enter the currently published amount or provider estimate and preserve the source date. An airport booking surcharge can be different from an airport rank access fee.

Payment surcharges need their own basis

Queensland says a credit card transaction surcharge may apply and identifies a 5% cap. Victoria publishes different caps for commercial-passenger-vehicle-specific payment devices and ordinary credit or debit cards. The applicable cap, device and calculation base depend on the transaction.

The default 2% is only a user scenario. Enter zero for cash where no surcharge applies or the verified percentage for the chosen payment method. A provider cannot turn a surcharge into an unexplained rate increase; ask for a breakdown and receipt.

Subsidies and shared payments are not interchangeable

A taxi subsidy can have eligibility, trip, membership, maximum contribution and co-payment rules. Enter only the confirmed dollar benefit for the specific trip. The page caps the discount at fare plus surcharge so the result cannot become negative, but it does not validate a scheme or process a voucher.

The per-passenger amount simply divides the final estimate equally. A shared ride may have a negotiated or regulated method different from equal splitting, especially where passengers leave at different destinations. Agree on the split and understand whether additional stops change distance or waiting.

Accessible taxi travel requires service details

Wheelchair accessible taxis can involve loading, securement, high-occupancy definitions and protected fare rules. Queensland says the meter may only start after a passenger using a wheelchair is safely loaded and secured. Do not enter loading time as waiting without checking the rule.

Book the required vehicle and explain mobility equipment, passenger count and assistance needs. An ordinary high-occupancy fee may not apply in the same way to a wheelchair trip. The custom fields can hold confirmed charges, but accessibility eligibility and driver duties remain outside the formula.

GST and receipt reconciliation

Queensland’s published maximum passenger fares state that GST is included. The page therefore does not add another GST line. Custom rates should be entered on the same passenger-payment basis as the quote. A business claiming input tax credits must use a valid tax invoice and its own eligibility rather than subtracting one eleventh from this estimate.

At the end of a Queensland trip, a passenger can request a receipt with a breakdown including payment surcharges. Compare flagfall, tariff, distance, waiting, tolls, extras and payment method. A small difference can reflect actual route or waiting; a material unexplained amount needs the provider’s review.

Frequently asked questions

Are the Queensland rates current?

The presets use official maximum rank-or-hail rates effective 1 July 2026. Recheck the official page for a later trip.

Can I use the presets for Sydney or Melbourne?

No. Choose custom and enter current local rates. Victoria and other jurisdictions can use different meter structures and areas.

Should I enter the whole journey time as waiting?

No. Enter only minutes charged under the relevant waiting or time component. Queensland waiting applies when the taxi is not moving.

Does the result include GST?

Queensland published maximum rates include GST. Custom inputs should follow the basis of the verified quote or rate card.

Is a booked taxi always capped by the rank fare?

No. In Queensland, most ordinary booked services are not subject to the rank-or-hail maximum, though a fare estimate or agreement is required.

Does equal passenger splitting change the meter?

No. It only divides the final estimate. Multiple stops or an official shared-fare arrangement can change the actual charge.
