This quantity take-off does not decide boundary ownership, cost sharing, planning approval, electrical design or animal containment suitability.
Schedule the fence line and each termination
How the component count is assembled
The calculator divides total line length by maximum line-post spacing and rounds upward to obtain spans. A straight line between two end assemblies has one fewer intermediate line post than spans. It separately allows one strainer assembly at each end, one at each entered corner or major change, and two around each gate opening. Real brace assemblies can contain multiple posts, stays and anchors, so price the entered strainer rate as a complete specified assembly.
Wire length equals fence length multiplied by strand count and the entered allowance. Mesh uses one full-length run when selected. Both are divided by their roll lengths and rounded upward. Droppers equal the number per span multiplied by total spans. This transparent schedule lets a fencing contractor replace the planning assumptions with the actual design.
Start with land use, stock and risk
A fence that marks a boundary has a different job from one that contains cattle, sheep, goats, horses, dogs or pest animals. Stock size, behaviour, pressure, horn risk and training affect height, wire arrangement, visibility and energisation. Agriculture Victoria’s re-fencing guidance notes that stock type and class influence fence style and that land-class planning can support grazing and water management.
Map waterways, dams, shelterbelts, steep land, erosion, roads and handling facilities before selecting the cheapest alignment. Fencing can protect remnant vegetation and improve biosecurity, but poor placement can trap stock in floods, block wildlife movement or make maintenance unsafe. Gates should support everyday livestock and machinery movement without opening animals toward a road.
High-risk quarantine or boundary areas may justify double fencing or an internal separation zone. Agriculture Victoria’s small-landholder biosecurity material recommends maintaining boundaries and considering double fences in high-risk zones. Treat that as a planning prompt, then obtain advice suited to the enterprise.
Check boundaries, approvals and neighbour arrangements
Do not build from an old post line without confirming the legal boundary where position matters. Survey information, title interests, easements, road reserves and waterway controls can affect alignment. State fencing law may address contribution and process between adjoining owners; obtain jurisdiction-specific advice before assuming a calculator total can be divided equally.
Planning exemptions and controls differ. The NSW Planning Portal, for example, describes conditions for some fences in rural, environmental protection and RU5 zones, including height, materials and electric-fence construction. That page is not a national rule and does not decide another state or a site with heritage, biodiversity, koala-corridor, bushfire, road-safety or local overlays.
Confirm permits for vegetation removal, work near waterways, road entrances and electrification. Keep approval and neighbour correspondence with the final survey and fence schedule. A low material count does not cure an unlawful location.
Survey terrain before setting post spacing
Ground profile
Mark crests, hollows, gullies and changes of direction. Posts may need closer spacing where the wire must follow ground without gaps.
Soil and rock
Test likely post locations. Rock drilling, unstable fill, reactive clay or wet ground can change equipment and footing design.
Water movement
Keep flood debris and erosion in mind. A mesh fence across flow can act as a dam and transfer damaging loads to posts.
Use chainage and coordinates for corners, gates and special assemblies. Measure slope distance where materials follow the ground, not only a map projection. The editable percentage allows modest handling and terrain loss but should not hide known extra lines. Add each creek structure, cattle grid, laneway junction and electric cut-out explicitly.
Locate underground and overhead services before driving or boring posts. Plan safe plant access and exclusion areas. Remote work also needs communications, weather, fire danger, first aid and emergency arrangements.
Strainers and gates control the line
Strainer assemblies resist wire tension at ends, corners, gates and selected changes in grade. Their design depends on soil, load, fence type and construction method. Under-specifying them can allow a long fence to sag even when every intermediate post is present. Ask the contractor to identify assembly type, post size, embedment, bracing and anchor treatment.
Gate packages include more than a leaf. Allow posts or assemblies, hinges, latches, chains, stops, vehicle clearance and stock-safe gaps. Consider emergency access and how a person operates the gate without standing in a dangerous position. Electrified lines need appropriate isolation and safe gate transfer arrangements.
Wire tension must suit product and fence design. Excess tension can damage components, while insufficient tension reduces containment. Corrosion environment, timber treatment, dissimilar metals and fire exposure influence durability. Keep product specifications and installation records for future repair.
Treat electric fencing as an electrical system
The calculator can count physical strands but does not size an energiser, earth system, lead-out cable, warning signs, lightning protection or vegetation-control programme. Long fence length alone does not determine electrical performance. Wire material, joins, leakage, soil moisture, earthing, parallel loads and branches all matter.
Use equipment and installation requirements applicable to the site and jurisdiction. Keep electric fences away from unsafe interactions with public paths, roads, gates and other services. Commission and test the system at relevant points, record readings and train users. Vegetation growth, broken insulators and poor joins can reduce performance over time, so inspection access and maintenance cost belong in the design.

The total adds priced components, labour by fence metre, gates and fixed costs, applies contingency and optionally GST. It does not price survey, neighbour contribution, removal of the old fence, pest-exclusion aprons, electric hardware or ongoing vegetation control unless included in an entered rate. Compare quote exclusions as carefully as the total.
Inspect the line before releasing stock
Walk both sides where safe. Check alignment, strainers, posts, joins, tension, mesh clearance, sharp ends, gate operation and gaps at gullies. Confirm that removed wire and offcuts are collected; they can injure livestock and damage machinery. Verify road and waterway interfaces against approvals.
Introduce stock only after the fence has been accepted and any electric system commissioned. Observe behaviour at corners, gates and water points. A fence that appears intact may still funnel animals into a weak section. Record defects by chainage so repair crews can locate them.
Create a maintenance map with inspection frequency, vegetation tasks, flood checks and spare component locations. After fire, flood or a fallen tree, isolate unsafe sections and manage animals before repair. The long-term cost of rural fencing includes access and inspection, not only the construction invoice.

How does the calculator count line posts?
It rounds fence length divided by spacing upward to spans, then subtracts one for intermediate posts between two end assemblies.
Why are gate posts counted as strainer assemblies?
Each entered gate adds two termination assemblies to the concept schedule. Replace that assumption with the actual gate and brace design.
Does the fence length come from property area?
No. Survey each boundary or internal line. Properties with equal area can have very different perimeters, terrain and subdivisions.
Can I split the estimate with my neighbour?
The tool does not decide legal liability or contribution. Check the relevant state or territory law and obtain advice where needed.
Does the wire count include an electric offset?
Only if you include that strand in the entered number and separately price its insulators, energiser, earthing and other electrical components.
Are the default rates current Australian prices?
No. They only demonstrate the cost structure. Replace them with local material, freight, labour and equipment quotations.
