Metric Conversion Calculator Australia
Convert length, area, mass, volume, speed, temperature and energy with explicit unit symbols and transparent reference factors. The same workbench handles familiar Australian metric units and common imperial or US comparison units without treating a rounded display as measurement accuracy.
Issue a conversion
How the conversion engine works
Every ordinary unit is mapped to a base unit for its physical dimension. Length uses metres, area uses square metres, mass uses kilograms, volume uses litres, speed uses metres per second and energy uses joules. The input is first multiplied by its source factor to reach the base unit, then divided by the destination factor. This two-stage approach makes the direction visible and prevents a collection of unrelated one-off formulas.
Temperature is different because its scales do not share the same zero. A temperature is first translated to degrees Celsius and then translated to the requested scale. For that reason, the one-unit reference for temperature is a complete point conversion, not a universal multiplication factor. One degree Celsius as a temperature point is 33.8 degrees Fahrenheit, while a temperature interval of one Celsius degree is 1.8 Fahrenheit degrees. The calculator handles points, not changes in temperature.
Fahrenheit point to Celsius: (°F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9.
Kelvin point to Celsius: K − 273.15.
Australia’s legal measurement system is based on SI
The National Measurement Institute states that Australian legal units are prescribed in terms of the International System of Units, or SI. NMI maintains Australia’s primary measurement standards and provides traceability to SI for Australian measurements. That national framework matters when a measurement determines price, compliance, health, engineering performance or a legal outcome.
A web conversion does not create traceability. Traceability requires an unbroken chain of calibrations to recognised standards, with uncertainty considered at each stage. If a weighbridge, fuel dispenser, scale or other instrument is used for trade, approval, verification and maintenance requirements can apply. This page can translate the number on a record; it cannot verify the instrument that produced the number.
Exact definitions and measured quantities are not the same thing
Several conversion constants are exact by international definition. An international inch is exactly 25.4 millimetres, a foot is exactly 0.3048 metres, an international mile is exactly 1,609.344 metres and a nautical mile is exactly 1,852 metres. An international pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms. Those exact relationships do not make an entered package length or body mass exact.
If a tape measure was read only to the nearest centimetre, converting the value to six decimal feet does not reduce the original uncertainty. Choose decimal places for communication, not to manufacture certainty. In technical work, significant figures, instrument resolution, calibration uncertainty and the way a value was sampled can be more important than the mathematical conversion constant.
Area and volume scale in two and three dimensions
Area conversion squares the underlying length relationship. Because one foot is 0.3048 metres, one square foot is 0.09290304 square metres, not 0.3048 square metres. A hectare is 10,000 square metres. An acre is approximately 4,046.8564224 square metres under the international definition used here.
Volume conversion cubes a length relationship. The litre is one cubic decimetre, and 1,000 litres make one cubic metre. The imperial gallon and US liquid gallon are different: the imperial gallon is 4.54609 litres, while the US liquid gallon is 3.785411784 litres. Always preserve the word “imperial” or “US” beside a gallon result. A bare gallon label is an avoidable source of fuel, recipe and capacity errors.
Mass is not force or freight chargeable weight
The mass section converts kilograms, grams, tonnes, pounds, ounces and stone. It does not convert mass to weight force in newtons because that requires gravitational acceleration. Everyday Australian usage often says an object “weighs” a number of kilograms, but engineering work should distinguish mass from force.
Freight invoices can use actual mass, volumetric mass or the greater of the two under a carrier’s tariff. Converting kilograms to pounds does not calculate volumetric weight, pallet space, density or a chargeable quantity. Preserve the carrier’s measurement basis and rounding rule before comparing quotations.
Speed needs a route and time definition
Kilometres per hour are standard for Australian road speeds. Metres per second are common in science and engineering. Miles per hour remain familiar in some overseas material, and knots describe nautical miles per hour. The page converts the rate only; it does not calculate travel time, road distance, wind, current or legal speed.
A knot is exactly one nautical mile per hour, so it is 1.852 kilometres per hour. Do not substitute an international land mile. When converting an average speed, confirm that stops, waiting and breaks were either included in elapsed time or excluded consistently.
Energy, kilojoules and food Calories
Australian nutrition panels commonly state energy in kilojoules. The capitalised food Calorie is a kilocalorie, written kcal. This workbench uses the thermochemical relationship 1 kcal = 4.184 kJ, so a kilojoule-to-Calorie result is an energy conversion only. It does not calculate the energy in a meal from ingredients, serving size or nutrient composition.
A kilowatt-hour is 3.6 megajoules. Electricity bills usually price kilowatt-hours, while appliance labels may show watts and food labels show kilojoules. Converting energy does not calculate cost because a tariff, time band, loss factor and billing period are separate inputs. It also does not convert power to energy without a duration.
Use percentage displays and rounding deliberately
The decimal control changes the displayed result, not the underlying conversion calculation. The script retains JavaScript numeric precision and formats the final quantities. If a contractual or regulatory rule says round up, truncate, use a particular increment or retain a fixed number of significant figures, apply that rule after confirming its exact wording. Ordinary rounding to decimal places is not interchangeable with significant-figure rounding.
Very large or very small values can be difficult to communicate in fixed decimals. Scientific notation, SI prefixes and a stated uncertainty may be clearer. Avoid a chain of repeated conversions between rounded displays; convert once from the best available source value to reduce accumulated rounding.

Frequently asked questions
Can I convert kilometres to miles?
Yes. Select kilometre as the source and international mile as the destination. The exact relationship used is one mile equals 1,609.344 metres.
Does this convert kJ to food Calories?
Yes. Select kilojoule and kilocalorie. The result uses 1 kcal = 4.184 kJ, but it does not determine a food portion’s energy content.
Why can I not convert kilograms to litres?
They measure different dimensions. Converting mass to volume requires the material’s density and often temperature or concentration.
Are US and imperial gallons interchangeable?
No. An imperial gallon is 4.54609 litres and a US liquid gallon is 3.785411784 litres. Choose the named variant.
Does more decimal places make the measurement more accurate?
No. It only changes display precision. Accuracy and uncertainty come from the source method, instrument, calibration and sampling.
Can I use this result for a trade measurement certificate?
No. Legal and trade measurements can require approved, verified instruments and traceability. This page performs arithmetic only.
