Interstate Removal Cost Calculator Australia | Quote

Interstate Removal & Moving Cost Calculator Australia

Build a removalist quote from measured cubic volume, distance, linehaul, crew time, packing, storage, access, transit cover, contingency and GST. The manifest keeps every assumption visible for local or interstate comparison.

Move scope and rates

For loading, inventory administration and basic handling not in linehaul.
Use the quoted combined crew/truck rate if applicable.
This is a quote input, not an insurance recommendation.

What this Australian removal cost calculator measures

The calculator prices a user-defined removal scope rather than claiming a national average. Base handling is measured volume multiplied by a rate per cubic metre. Linehaul multiplies volume by distance in hundreds of kilometres and the entered linehaul rate. Additional crew labour uses hours multiplied by the combined hourly rate. Packing, storage, access, declared-value cover and other costs remain visible line items.

The subtotal receives a planning contingency and then GST when “add GST” is selected. The final total is divided by measured volume for a comparison rate. That rate is useful only when quotes cover the same inventory, distance, access and services. A low per-cubic-metre price can exclude labour, depot legs or storage that another quote includes.

Measure first, price second. An underestimated inventory can turn a fixed-looking estimate into extra volume, another vehicle, a shuttle or delayed delivery. Create a room-by-room list and ask each removalist to confirm the cubic volume and inclusions in writing.

Volume is not the number of bedrooms

Two three-bedroom homes can contain very different volumes. Garages, sheds, outdoor furniture, book collections, gym equipment and storage cages materially change the load. Disassembled furniture may pack efficiently, while fragile or irregular items can consume more usable space. A virtual or in-person survey is usually more reliable than a bedroom label.

If the quote is based on inventory rather than cubic metres, ask the provider to disclose the volume assigned to each item and the rule for additions. If it is based on truck space measured on collection day, record how the measurement is made. The ACCC personal services guide includes a removalist example where an agreed measurement and price mattered when the supplier later demanded more money.

Distance and linehaul basis

Road distance between the pickup and delivery addresses may not be the billed distance. A carrier can price depot-to-depot legs, backloading availability, ferry costs, tolls, fuel levies or regional access. Shared loads can take a longer route and wider delivery window. Enter the distance and rate basis stated in the quote, not an unrelated straight-line distance.

The linehaul formula uses rate per cubic metre per 100 kilometres. If a quote uses a flat interstate price, set the linehaul rate to zero and place the amount in other quoted costs. If the price is per truck kilometre rather than per volume-distance unit, calculate that amount externally and enter it as other cost. Do not force dissimilar tariffs into the same field.

Crew time and property access

Crew hours can include loading, unloading, wrapping, disassembly, reassembly and waiting. Clarify crew size, hourly minimum, travel time, overtime and rounding. A narrow street can require a smaller shuttle vehicle. Stairs, long carries, lifts, parking permits and building booking windows can add time or a fixed fee. Enter known access charges separately and photograph difficult access before quoting.

Apartment moves can require lift padding, deposits, restricted hours and certificate-of-currency evidence. Regional properties can have unsealed roads, low bridges or turning restrictions. The calculator cannot discover those conditions, so the access field is a prompt to have them written into scope.

Packing, storage and delivery timing

Packing cost can cover boxes, paper, tape, mattress covers, professional packing, unpacking and box collection. Ask whether materials are sold, rented or refundable. Owner-packed goods can have different damage or cover conditions. Clearly label fragile, high-value and essential-first-night cartons.

Storage pricing can include handling into store, daily or monthly rent, minimum periods, warehouse insurance, redelivery and access fees. This page multiplies days by one entered daily rate and does not add a second warehouse handling event unless you include it elsewhere. Interstate delivery windows can create storage when settlement dates do not align, so confirm who bears delay costs.

Transit cover and consumer guarantees

The declared-value percentage is a quote-comparison input, not a conclusion about insurance. Check who provides cover, licensing, exclusions, excess, valuation basis and whether owner-packed goods are covered. Household contents insurance may or may not cover a move. Obtain the product disclosure statement and consider advice appropriate to the value and risk.

Australian Consumer Law consumer guarantees can apply to personal services, including due care and skill and fitness for a disclosed purpose. Contract terms, remedies and insurance are related but not identical. Keep the written quote, inventory, condition photographs, correspondence and payment evidence. Report damage or missing goods promptly under the agreed process.

Interstate quarantine checks

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry warns that rules apply to goods moving between states. Plants, produce, honey, soil and some pet animals can be restricted. Household potted plants are a particular concern because soil can carry pests and diseases. Check the origin, destination and every quarantine zone crossed before packing.

Treatment, cleaning, disposal or replacement can add cost. Do not assume a removalist accepting an item means it can lawfully cross the border. Clean outdoor equipment, garden tools and items carrying soil. Put any verified treatment, disposal or replacement allowance in other quoted costs and keep official guidance with the move plan.

StorageAre handling, minimum period, access and redelivery included?Days, daily rate and other cost
RiskWhat cover, excess, exclusions and valuation basis apply?Declared value and entered cover rate

Run each quote with identical volume and service assumptions. If a provider supplies only a fixed total, enter that total in other cost and zero overlapping fields, then add excluded services. Avoid using contingency to hide a known quote difference; record known items explicitly and reserve contingency for uncertainty.

Backloading, containers and self-moves

Backloading can reduce price by sharing available vehicle capacity, but collection and delivery windows may be wider and goods can be handled at depots or alongside other consignments. Ask whether the quote guarantees volume, dates and direct delivery, and how goods are separated and inventoried. Select the shared-load profile for labelling only; the calculation still uses the rates you enter.

A container move can shift work from linehaul into container delivery, hire, loading, terminal, storage and redelivery charges. Enter flat terminal and container fees as other quoted costs, and use crew fields only for paid labour. Confirm weight limits, dangerous-goods exclusions, site access, loading time and responsibility for securing the load.

For a self-move, include vehicle hire, fuel, tolls, ferry, accommodation, equipment hire, packing, helper labour and the value of additional travel time. Do not use a zero labour value merely because friends are helping without an invoice; record at least the cash costs, safety constraints and realistic schedule. Check licence, vehicle loading, fatigue and insurance requirements independently.

Frequently asked questions

How do I estimate the cubic metres for a move?

Prepare a room-by-room inventory and obtain a professional survey where possible. Ask the removalist to confirm the measured volume and treatment of additions in writing.

Does distance mean straight-line or road distance?

Use the billing basis in the quote, usually a road or depot route. The calculator does not find a route and should not use straight-line distance for linehaul pricing.

Does the estimate include insurance?

Only the percentage and declared value you enter. Verify the provider, policy, excess, exclusions, owner-packed treatment and valuation basis independently.

Can I move household plants interstate?

Restrictions vary by origin, destination and plant or soil type. Check official interstate quarantine rules before packing; treatment or disposal may be required.

Should GST be added to a removalist quote?

Check whether every quoted component is GST-inclusive. Select “add 10%” only for a GST-exclusive cost stack and do not add GST twice.

Why include a contingency?

It provides a planning buffer for uncertainty, not undisclosed known costs. Confirm inventory, access, storage, waiting and delivery terms first, then use a modest documented allowance.
