How to Use This Calculator
Follow these steps to calculate your potential betting returns accurately:
- Select your bet type: Choose from singles, multiples or system bets such as Lucky 15, Yankee or Trixie. Each bet type has different requirements for selections and covers various combinations.
- Choose odds format: Switch between fractional (e.g., 5/1) or decimal (e.g., 6.00) depending on your preference. Both formats produce identical results.
- Enter your total stake: Input the total amount you wish to wager. For each way bets, remember this will be doubled (half on win, half on place).
- Add selections: Click “Add Selection” to create betting lines. Enter the odds for each selection and mark whether it won, lost, was voided or resulted in a dead heat.
- Apply special conditions: Tick the Each Way box if applicable and configure place terms. Add Rule 4 deductions if a non-runner affects your bet.
- Calculate: Click the Calculate Returns button to see your total returns, profit and detailed breakdown of winning combinations.

Odds Calculation Methods
Fractional Odds
Fractional odds represent the profit you make relative to your stake. For example, odds of 5/1 (five-to-one) mean you win £5 for every £1 staked, plus your original stake back. To calculate returns: (Stake × Numerator ÷ Denominator) + Stake.
Example: A £10 bet at 7/2 returns £35 profit (£10 × 7 ÷ 2) plus your £10 stake = £45 total return.
Decimal Odds
Decimal odds show your total return for every £1 staked, including your original stake. To calculate: Stake × Decimal Odds = Total Return. Subtract your stake to find profit.
Example: A £10 bet at 4.50 returns £45 total (£10 × 4.50). Your profit is £35 (£45 – £10).
Accumulator Calculations
For accumulators, multiply the decimal odds of all selections together, then multiply by your stake. For fractional odds, convert to decimal first. Each winning selection increases the total potential return exponentially.
Example: Three selections at 2.00, 3.00 and 2.50 with £10 stake: 2.00 × 3.00 × 2.50 × £10 = £150 total return (£140 profit).
Special Betting Conditions
Each Way Betting
An each way bet consists of two separate wagers: one for your selection to win and another for it to place (finish in the top positions). Your total stake doubles as it covers both outcomes. If your selection wins, both parts pay out. If it only places, you receive returns at a fraction of the win odds (typically 1/4 or 1/5).
Place terms vary by event. Horse races with 8-15 runners typically pay 1/5 odds for top three places, whilst races with 16+ runners may pay for four places. Check your bookmaker’s terms before placing each way bets.
Rule 4 Deductions
Rule 4 applies when a horse is withdrawn from a race after betting has commenced. Bookmakers reduce payouts on winning bets proportionally, based on the withdrawn horse’s odds. The shorter the odds of the non-runner, the larger the deduction applied to remaining selections.
Deductions range from 2.5p in the £ for horses at 14/1 or longer, up to 90p in the £ for odds-on favourites below 1/9. Multiple non-runners result in cumulative deductions.
Dead Heat Rules
When two or more selections tie for the same position, a dead heat is declared. Your stake is divided by the number of tied winners, and returns calculated on the reduced stake. For a two-way dead heat, you receive half your potential returns.
Example: A £20 bet at 5/1 in a two-way dead heat: Calculate returns on £10 stake (£10 × 5 + £10 = £60), then add back the other £10 for £70 total return.
Void Selections
Voided selections are treated as non-runners and removed from your bet. For single bets, stakes are returned. In multiples, the bet continues with remaining selections at reduced odds. A voided selection in a fourfold accumulator becomes a treble.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common Betting Mistakes to Avoid
Misunderstanding Odds Formats
Confusing fractional and decimal odds leads to incorrect return expectations. Remember that decimal odds include your stake whilst fractional odds represent profit only. Always verify which format you’re using and convert if necessary to avoid disappointment.
Overlooking Each Way Stakes
Forgetting that each way bets cost double the stated stake is a frequent error. When placing a £10 each way bet, you’re actually wagering £20. Budget accordingly and check your total outlay before confirming bets.
Ignoring Place Terms
Each way place terms vary significantly between events. Some races pay 1/4 odds for three places, others pay 1/5 for four places. Always verify the specific terms for your bet, as this dramatically affects potential returns from placed selections.
Misjudging System Bet Requirements
Placing a Trixie with only 2 selections or a Yankee with 3 selections isn’t possible. Each bet type requires a specific number of selections. Verify requirements before building your bet to avoid frustration.
Forgetting Rule 4 Impact
Non-runners can significantly reduce potential returns through Rule 4 deductions. When multiple horses are withdrawn, deductions accumulate quickly. Factor this into calculations, especially in large fields where withdrawals are more likely.
Accumulator Overconfidence
Large accumulators offer tempting returns but require every selection to win. The probability of success decreases dramatically with each additional selection. Consider system bets like Patents or Yankees for better coverage if you’re less confident about all selections winning.
Responsible Betting Practices
Whilst betting can be entertaining, it’s crucial to approach it responsibly and within your means. Set a strict budget before you start and never exceed it, regardless of wins or losses. Betting should never interfere with essential expenses like bills, rent or groceries.
Chasing losses is one of the most common pitfalls in betting. Accept that losses are part of the activity and resist the temptation to place larger bets to recover previous losses. This strategy rarely succeeds and often leads to deeper financial problems.
Many bookmakers offer self-exclusion schemes and deposit limits to help you maintain control. Take advantage of these features if you find betting becoming problematic. Setting daily, weekly or monthly limits prevents impulsive decisions during emotional moments.
If you feel betting is affecting your life negatively, seek help immediately. Organisations like GamCare (0808 8020 133) and BeGambleAware provide free, confidential support for anyone concerned about their betting habits. Remember, seeking assistance is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Never bet under the influence of alcohol or when emotional. These states impair judgement and lead to poor decision-making. Take regular breaks from betting to maintain perspective and prevent it from dominating your leisure time.
