Car Transport Cost Calculator Australia
Build an interstate or local vehicle-carrier planning quote from route kilometres, a linehaul rate, service multiplier, vehicle condition, depot access, storage, cover, contingency and GST treatment. Every rate remains editable because carrier routes and contracts determine the actual price.
Prepare the carrier lane
Replace every rate with a written carrier quotation and confirm the service, cover, dates and vehicle condition.
How the vehicle transport estimate is assembled
The linehaul component multiplies quoted road kilometres by the entered rate, vehicle count and route or service multiplier. The multiplier can represent enclosed transport, priority movement, oversize handling, a low-volume lane or another clearly documented factor. A percentage surcharge is then applied to the base and linehaul components. Keep the multiplier and surcharge separate so the carrier can explain what each one buys.
Access, transit cover, inspection, storage and other written items are added as direct amounts. The contingency is a planning allowance on the subtotal, not a carrier charge. GST is added only when the selected scenario says every entered amount is GST-exclusive. Actual tax invoices can contain items with a different treatment, so reconcile the final quote line by line.
Type surcharge: (booking base + linehaul) × entered surcharge rate.
Planning total: subtotal + contingency + GST selected by the user.
Use the carrier’s road lane, not straight-line distance
A transport truck follows a legal road route between collection and delivery points or depots. City-centre distance, geodesic distance and the route between actual yards can differ materially. Vehicle height, mass, dangerous weather, road closures, ferries, remote access and multi-vehicle scheduling can change the lane. Enter a route distance supplied by the carrier or a suitable current routing source.
The per-kilometre rate is a transparent planning input rather than a published national tariff. Carriers may quote a fixed lane price, price by vehicle type, combine multiple consignments or charge separate terminal and remote-area amounts. Convert their quotation into this stack only when the definitions match. Do not infer a market rate from the default example.
Depot-to-depot and door-to-door are different services
Depot collection can reduce local carrier time, but it may require two extra trips, temporary storage and coordination within restricted opening hours. Door collection can add access charges where a large transporter cannot enter a street, apartment complex, worksite or rural property. A smaller transfer truck may create another handoff.
Confirm whether the stated price includes pickup and delivery at the exact postcodes, terminal handling, failed collection, redelivery and waiting. If the owner cannot attend, ask which identification and authority documents are required. The calculator’s access field can hold a quoted amount, but it cannot predict whether the location is safe or serviceable.
Vehicle condition changes equipment and risk
A running, steering and braking vehicle is different from a non-running project car. Flat tyres, seized brakes, very low clearance, roof racks, modifications, loose parts, fluid leaks and missing keys can require a winch, forklift, special ramps or refusal. Provide accurate dimensions and condition before accepting the quote.
Open transport exposes the vehicle to normal road and weather conditions. Enclosed transport can reduce exposure and may be chosen for valuable, rare or delicate vehicles, but the contract defines what protection and responsibility actually apply. The type surcharge field can model a quoted premium; it does not certify that the selected service is suitable.
Condition reports protect both handoffs
Remove personal items unless the carrier expressly accepts them. Photograph every side, wheels, glass, interior where relevant, odometer and existing damage in good light. Record fuel level and any warning lights. Both pickup and delivery condition reports should identify the vehicle by VIN or other agreed identifier and be signed or acknowledged.
Inspect promptly at delivery within the contract process. Note new damage before driving away when possible, preserve photographs and follow the carrier’s notification steps. The inspection amount in the calculator is only a budget item. A paid inspection does not automatically change contract limits or insurance coverage.
Transit cover is not one universal product
Ask whether the carrier’s price includes any liability protection, what events are excluded, which excess applies, how market or agreed value is determined and who handles a claim. Your own comprehensive motor policy may exclude commercial transit or require notice. A carrier’s “insurance included” phrase needs the policy or contractual detail behind it.
Do not enter the vehicle’s value as though the cover fee is a fixed percentage unless that is how the written quotation works. The calculator accepts a direct cover charge and keeps it outside linehaul. Confirm whether accessories, modifications, personal contents, mechanical failure, delay, loss of use and pre-existing damage are covered.
Dates are windows, not a speed promise
The transit-day indicator divides route kilometres by an entered daily linehaul capacity and adds handoff days. It is an operational sensitivity only. A transporter may consolidate loads, change vehicles, rest drivers, wait for a backload, encounter weather or close a depot. Collection and delivery windows should come from the contract or booking confirmation.
Storage charges can begin before pickup, after arrival or after a free period. Record the trigger, daily rate, weekend treatment and release conditions. If a delay would create accommodation, hire-car or missed-event costs, discuss that risk before booking rather than assuming the planning contingency will be recoverable.
Registration, permits and road use remain separate
Transporting a vehicle on a carrier is different from driving it. If the vehicle must be driven on public roads to reach a depot and is unregistered, a state or territory unregistered vehicle permit or another lawful arrangement may be required. Permit conditions, insurance and eligible journeys vary. Check the road authority for every relevant jurisdiction.
For an imported vehicle, entry on the Register of Approved Vehicles is generally a prerequisite before first registration for road use, subject to the applicable pathway. Carrier movement, customs, biosecurity, approval, modifications, inspection and registration are separate cost and compliance stages. This domestic planning docket does not model importing a road vehicle.
Consumer rights and written contracts
The ACCC explains that consumer guarantees can apply to services bought by consumers, including due care and skill, fitness for a disclosed purpose and supply within a reasonable time where no time is fixed. Coverage and exceptions depend on the transaction; services to transport or store goods for business purposes are specifically identified as an exception from consumer guarantees.
Keep the quote, booking terms, tax invoice, payment record, condition reports and messages. Identify the contracting business rather than only a broker or comparison website. If something goes wrong, use the provider’s complaint process and the consumer protection or dispute channel relevant to the contract and jurisdiction. This page does not determine a remedy.

Frequently asked questions
Does this retrieve live carrier prices?
No. Every rate is user-entered. Use written carrier quotes for the exact vehicle, lane, dates, service and condition.
Can I use straight-line distance?
Not for a carrier quote. Enter the relevant road lane between actual collection, depot and delivery points.
Why does a non-running car cost more?
It may require winching, forklifts, special ramps, more handling time or a different transporter. Disclose its real condition.
Is transit cover the same as comprehensive car insurance?
No. Cover, exclusions, valuation and excess depend on the carrier contract and policies. Confirm both carrier and personal insurer positions.
Does the transit-day result guarantee delivery?
No. It is distance divided by an entered daily capacity plus handoff days. Only the carrier can state its collection and delivery commitment.
Can an unregistered car be driven to the depot?
Only under a lawful state or territory arrangement. Check the relevant road authority, permit conditions and insurance before any road movement.
