Net to Gross Salary Calculator Australia: Reverse Tax

Net to Gross Salary Calculator Australia

Start with the annual cash amount you want to keep and solve backwards for an indicative gross salary. This planning worksheet uses Australian resident individual rates for 2025-26 or 2026-27, the low income tax offset and an optional full 2% Medicare levy. It separates reverse annual assessment from employer payroll withholding.

What “net to gross” means in this calculator

A normal salary calculator starts with gross pay and subtracts estimated tax. A net-to-gross calculator solves the opposite question: what gross cash salary would be needed to leave a chosen amount after the modelled tax, levy and pre-tax sacrifice? There is no universal multiplier because Australia uses progressive tax bands. The last dollars of a salary can face a different rate from the first dollars.

The result is an annual assessment-style estimate for an Australian resident adult. It is not an exact payslip. PAYG withholding tables operate by pay period, include rounding rules and depend on declarations made to the employer. A final tax return also depends on income, deductions, offsets and obligations that may be absent from the payroll record. Compare both the annual total and the expected bank deposit.

Important boundary: this page does not calculate HELP or other study-loan repayments, Medicare levy surcharge, private-health adjustments, spouse or dependant thresholds, foreign-resident rates, working-holiday-maker rates, child support, Centrelink income tests or tax offsets other than LITO. Add those separately before using a gross target in a negotiation.

How the reverse solver works

Build taxable income

The candidate gross salary is reduced by the entered sacrifice, then combined with other taxable income and deductions. Taxable income cannot fall below zero.

Measure salary tax

The calculator compares total liability with a baseline that excludes salary. This allocates the extra income tax and selected levy caused by the salary scenario.

Search for the target

A bounded numerical search repeatedly tests gross salaries until the calculated net cash is within a few cents of the desired annual amount.

Income tax is calculated progressively. For 2025-26, taxable income from $18,201 to $45,000 is taxed at 16%, followed by 30% to $135,000, 37% to $190,000 and 45% above $190,000. For 2026-27, the first taxable band above $18,200 is 15%; the other thresholds and rates used here are unchanged.

The low income tax offset is applied to the total tax calculation: up to $700 at lower incomes, reducing through the published income ranges. Because the page measures total liability with and without salary, the salary can also phase out some offset. That is one reason a simple “gross equals net divided by one minus marginal rate” shortcut can miss the answer.

Medicare levy choices need care

The standard Medicare levy rate is 2% of taxable income, but reductions and exemptions can apply. Thresholds depend on the income year and may use family circumstances. This tool deliberately offers only two transparent scenarios: apply a full 2% to modelled taxable income, or apply no levy. It does not pretend to decide eligibility from one salary figure.

If taxable income is near a low-income phase-in range, calculate the levy using the ATO return instructions or a registered tax professional and replace the difference in your own budget. Medicare levy is also distinct from Medicare levy surcharge. The surcharge can apply to some taxpayers without appropriate private patient hospital cover and uses income-for-surcharge rules, not just taxable salary.

Choosing “do not apply” is not a claim that an exemption exists. It is a scenario switch for a person who has independently established a full exemption or wants to isolate ordinary income tax. Partial-year exemptions require a more detailed calculation.

Why other income and deductions change the answer

Suppose a person wants $80,000 of net cash from salary and also receives taxable investment income. Those investment dollars may already occupy lower tax bands, causing salary to enter a higher band sooner. The calculator therefore treats other income as a baseline and reports the incremental liability created by salary.

Deductions are applied against the combined taxable-income scenario and its baseline. This is a planning simplification. A deduction must be legally available and supported by records; entering a hopeful amount does not make it deductible. Some deductions may relate specifically to one income source, and losses can be subject to special rules.

When the baseline LITO exceeds baseline tax, the difference is not paid as cash by this calculator. LITO is non-refundable in this simplified treatment. Adding salary can use previously unused offset and later reduce it. The reverse result consequently reflects the total tax curve rather than a single headline percentage.

Salary sacrifice and employer super are separate from take-home cash

An effective salary sacrifice arrangement exchanges future salary for a benefit and must be agreed before the employee earns the entitlement. The entered sacrifice reduces both taxable salary and cash available in this worksheet. That can reduce income tax, but it does not make the benefit free. Fees, fringe benefits tax, reportable fringe benefits or contributions tax may affect the real outcome.

Salary-sacrificed contributions to super are employer contributions and count towards relevant contribution caps. The general concessional contributions cap has been $30,000 since 1 July 2024, and the cap includes more than voluntary sacrifice. Employer compulsory contributions and personal deductible contributions can also consume it. Higher-income additional tax and carry-forward rules are beyond this solver.

The employer-super field is only a package view: gross salary multiplied by the entered rate. Actual super guarantee earnings, maximum contribution bases, awards and contracts can differ from headline salary. Some job advertisements quote a package inclusive of super, while others quote salary plus super. Clarify the wording before comparing this result with an offer.

How to use the result in a pay discussion

CheckQuestion to askReason
Salary basisIs the figure base salary or total package?Employer super may be inside or outside the quoted number.
Pay cycleWeekly, fortnightly or monthly? The annual target can be divided, but actual withholding uses the payroll cycle.
Variable payAre bonuses, overtime or allowances guaranteed?Irregular income changes both cash timing and annual assessment.
BenefitsWhat fees, FBT or RFBA consequences apply?Economic value may differ from the sacrificed salary.
Debts and coverDo HELP or MLS rules apply? Both can materially reduce disposable cash and are excluded here.

Use the solved gross as a starting point, then run the proposed figure through the ATO tax withheld calculator or the employer’s payroll estimate. Compare annual net, pay-period deposit, employer super, leave, bonus conditions and non-cash benefits. A higher package can still produce less usable cash if it changes included benefits or debt repayments.

For a buffer, increase the target net by known annual commitments rather than adding an arbitrary gross amount. Retest when rates, residency, private health cover, study debt, deductions or sacrifice change. Save the income year beside the result so a later reader does not mistake it for a timeless salary quote.

Net-to-gross salary questions

Can I enter a weekly take-home target?

Convert it to an annual target using the real number of paid weeks, then choose the pay frequency for the displayed period result. Do not multiply a part-year contract by 52 unless that represents the intended annualised comparison.

Does required gross include employer super?

No. The headline is gross cash salary before the entered sacrifice. Employer super is shown separately using the rate you enter, because employment offers describe packages differently.

Why is this different from my payslip?

Payroll withholding uses pay-period tables, declarations and rounding. This page estimates annual tax and excludes HELP, MLS and several personal adjustments, so it is not a payroll engine.

Does the calculator support a Medicare levy exemption?

It allows a zero-levy scenario but does not determine eligibility. Use ATO rules to establish full, partial or family-based treatment.

Can deductions be used to guarantee a lower gross requirement?

No. Only valid deductions supported by facts and records belong in an assessment. The field tests arithmetic, not deductibility.

Is the 2026-27 tax cut included?

Yes. Selecting 2026-27 changes the rate on taxable income from $18,201 to $45,000 from 16% to 15% in this resident schedule.
