Artificial Lawn Installation Cost Calculator Australia
Estimate synthetic turf quantity, roll ordering, excavation, base aggregate, disposal, edging, labour, drainage and GST from your own measurements and supplier quotes. The result keeps surface material separate from the less visible ground preparation that often controls performance and price.
Measure the lawn and price every installation layer
Measure rectangles, but order to a roll layout
Length multiplied by width gives the net area of one rectangle. The zones field repeats that identical rectangle and also repeats its perimeter. It is useful for two matching courtyards, but it is not a shortcut for different shapes. Break an L-shaped yard into non-overlapping rectangles, calculate each zone, and combine the quantities only after deciding where seams will run.
Artificial turf is supplied in fixed widths and finite lengths. A simple area allowance can underestimate waste when a narrow strip forces another roll, or when blade direction must remain consistent. This calculator first adds your waste percentage, then rounds the result up to whole rolls using the entered roll dimensions. That is a conservative purchasing view, not an automated cutting plan.
Ask the supplier whether shorter cut lengths are sold. If so, replace the whole-roll result with the actual cutting schedule and keep the required-area figure as a cross-check. Record colour batch, pile direction, seam positions, joins around trees and whether offcuts can be used. Do not rotate a piece merely to save area if the blade direction creates a visible colour change.
The surface is only one layer of the installed system
A stable installation may involve vegetation removal, excavation, spoil loading, geotextile or separation fabric, graded granular base, compaction, a finer levelling course, turf, joining tape or adhesive, pins or perimeter restraints and infill. Product instructions and site conditions decide the exact build-up. The example values are editable placeholders, not Australian market averages.
Excavated volume is net lawn area multiplied by entered excavation depth. Disposal is priced against that uncompacted geometric volume. Actual loose spoil can occupy more space, disposal facilities may charge by mass, and contaminated soil has different handling rules. Obtain a destination-specific quote and check load, minimum-charge and access assumptions.
Base material mass equals net area multiplied by compacted base depth and density. This is a simplified compacted-volume calculation. A supplier may recommend a loose-volume conversion or additional quantity for trimming and compaction. Use the density and ordering method stated for the actual aggregate. More base is not automatically better: finished levels must still protect damp-proof courses, thresholds, drains and adjacent structures.
The ground-preparation rate and base aggregate are separate so they are not silently bundled. Labour is applied to net area, turf is applied to ordered whole-roll area, and edging uses the calculated rectangular perimeter. Drainage, restricted access, crane or barrow travel, service locating and equipment hire can be placed in the fixed allowance.
Plan water movement before choosing pile height
Synthetic turf may be perforated, but the whole system drains only as well as the layers and discharge route below it. Clay, rock, shallow soil, high groundwater, steep slopes and low points can change the design. Water must not be directed onto a neighbouring property or trapped against the home. Existing surface drains should remain accessible for cleaning.
YourHome explains that water-sensitive urban design aims to slow, filter and use stormwater on site. It recommends considering soil, depth, groundwater, slope and local rules, and minimising impervious surfaces. A synthetic surface should therefore be assessed as part of the entire site water plan rather than assumed to behave like living lawn.
Ask how the specified backing, seam tape and sub-base affect infiltration. Map where intense rainfall goes after the base is saturated. A professional may recommend graded falls, a drainage cell, perforated pipe, aggregate trench or lawful connection. Local government drainage rules take priority over a generic detail.
Compare heat, use, maintenance and environmental effects
Artificial lawn avoids mowing and routine irrigation, but it is not maintenance-free. Leaves and organic matter need removal, weeds can establish at edges or through accumulated dust, pet areas need hygienic cleaning, infill may redistribute, seams can open and high-traffic fibres can flatten. Ask for maintenance instructions, compatible cleaning products and repair methods before purchase.
Surface temperature in direct sun can be uncomfortable for bare feet and paws. Shade, orientation, fibre colour, infill and airflow influence the result. Test a sample on site during a hot period rather than relying on an indoor display. Living vegetation can provide shade, habitat, evapotranspirative cooling and stormwater benefits that plastic turf does not replace.
Consider material durability, shedding, end-of-life recovery and whether components can be separated. Ask the supplier for product composition, warranty exclusions, expected service life, ultraviolet resistance, fire information where relevant, and a documented recycling or disposal pathway. A long warranty is useful only if the installation conditions and maintenance obligations are achievable.
Compare at least one lower-plastic alternative: a smaller lawn combined with native or waterwise planting, mulch, permeable paths, groundcover, a play surface only where needed, or improvement of existing soil and irrigation. The decision should reflect the yard’s function, climate, shade, household use and capacity for maintenance, not just the installation total.
Put every quote onto the same scope sheet
| Scope item | Question for the installer | Calculator line |
|---|---|---|
| Survey and levels | Who confirms falls, thresholds, utilities and discharge? | Fixed allowance |
| Excavation | What depth, material and access are included? | Preparation rate |
| Spoil | Does removal include loading, transport and lawful fees? | Disposal rate |
| Base | What material, compacted depth and compaction standard? | Depth, density and $/t |
| Turf | What roll width, batch, pile direction and order quantity? | Roll and turf inputs |
| Joining and restraint | What tape, adhesive, pins, edging and infill are included? | Labour and edging |
| Drainage | Where does design rainfall discharge lawfully? | Fixed allowance |
| GST | Is the written total GST-inclusive? | GST selector |
Comparable quotes should identify product code, area, roll cuts, base build-up, disposal, drainage, exclusions, start conditions and warranty responsibility. Check whether the installer or manufacturer covers movement caused by an inadequate base. Obtain the contract terms before paying a deposit and retain product and batch records.
Australian consumer guarantees can apply to products and services. They do not remove the need to document the agreed outcome and installation method. Local licensing, insurance, home-building contract and dispute rules vary by state or territory and by job value, so check the relevant regulator.
Read the estimate without double-counting
The total adds turf supply, base aggregate, preparation, spoil disposal, labour, edging and the fixed allowance. Contingency is calculated on that subtotal. GST is then added only when the selector says the input prices exclude GST. If some quotes include GST and others exclude it, convert every input to one basis before calculating.
The per-square-metre output divides the full project allowance by net lawn area. It includes fixed and perimeter costs, so it should not be used as a transferable market rate for a different-sized yard. Small areas can have a high unit cost because mobilisation, delivery, drainage and minimum order charges do not shrink with area.
The roll count is intentionally simple: required area divided by one roll area, rounded upward. It cannot assess strip orientation, manufacturing length limits or reuse of offcuts. If the supplier sells exact cut lengths rather than whole rolls, cost those cuts and replace the turf line outside the calculator. The required area, net area and perimeter remain useful audit quantities.
Contingency is for unresolved scope, not an invitation to accept vague inclusions. Reduce uncertainty by exposing existing services, checking levels, testing infiltration where appropriate, confirming disposal and producing a cut plan. Keep a separate maintenance and eventual replacement allowance if comparing synthetic lawn with living landscape over many years.
Check site rules, neighbours and safe construction
Planning, strata or estate requirements may regulate landscaped area, deep-soil zones, tree protection, permeability, appearance or stormwater. Approval pathways differ across Australia and can change even within a council. Ask the relevant local authority and owners corporation before assuming that replacing living lawn is exempt.
Locate underground electricity, gas, water, communications, irrigation and drainage before excavation or pinning. Follow the asset owner’s instructions and use a competent locator where plans are insufficient. Protect tree roots and do not change ground levels around trunks without suitable advice. Provide safe barriers, dust control and sediment control during works.
Confirm that the chosen product and installation suit the intended users. Play spaces, childcare, balconies, rooftops, pool surrounds and bushfire-prone land can have additional design or approval considerations. The calculator estimates quantities and money; it does not certify fire, slip, impact, drainage, structural or chemical performance.
Artificial lawn installation questions
Does this calculator use an Australian artificial turf price per square metre?
No. Enter current supplier and installer prices whose inclusions you understand. The example numbers are editable demonstration values, not a national benchmark.
Why can ordered turf area exceed the waste-adjusted area?
The model rounds required area up to whole rolls. Confirm actual cut lengths and a seam layout because a supplier may not require whole-roll purchasing.
How is excavation calculated?
Net area is multiplied by entered depth. Loose-volume bulking, access and disposal charging methods require a site-specific adjustment or quote.
Does the base quantity include compaction waste?
It uses compacted depth and entered density only. Apply the supplier’s loose-ordering conversion and trimming allowance to the real purchase quantity.
Is artificial lawn automatically permeable?
No. Performance depends on backing, seams, base, soil, falls and discharge. Assess the complete stormwater route and local requirements.
Does the result include maintenance and replacement?
No. It is an installation allowance. Model cleaning, repairs, infill, expected life and end-of-life disposal separately for a whole-life comparison.
